Musical Memories is dedicated to helping those with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia recapture what they have lost. Research shows that music therapy is becoming a vital tool for caregivers and their loved ones. Noted neurologist Oliver Sacks recently commented in Skagit Valley Herald's article "Neurologist, choir explore music's healing power" that, "Even with advanced dementia, when powers of memory and language are lost, people will respond to music."
We have found that the CD, "Precious Memories" is particularly helpful in this regard. The beautiful instrumental arrangements are soothing and comforting to many patients. The website, http://www.caregiver.on.ca/cgcihidmmt.html shares, “One psychologist told me that in his Alzheimer special care unit, their…most successful sessions (audience was relaxed and peaceful) were with classical music and hymns."
Also, patients with a religious background often recall the hymns and their lyrics, even when dementia is advanced. The Association of Brethren Caregivers states, "Many individuals will maintain their ability to remember hymns and sing after they have lost the ability to speak. This is because of the areas of the brain affected by the disease. Singing brings great comfort to the individual."
We at Musical Memories have seen this on a personal level. Many of our family friends who suffer from dementia have been alternately soothed and revitalized when they listen to the CD. Because of this, we feel a great need to share "Precious Memories" with other caregivers as well.
